NetHack "raiden" の謎に迫る (4)

前回までのあらすじ

"Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of Folklore, Mythology, and Legend" "Pacific Mythology"という本にraidenという神に関する記述があることがわかりました。

Wikipedia英語版

前回である程度問題は解決したとは言えるのですが、「どうして神風と混同されたんだろう」というのは微妙に気になります。

そんな時、何気なくWikipedia英語版の"Raijin"の項目を見てみると、 Defending Japanという項目があり:

In one legend, Raijin is shown to defend Japan against the invading Mongols. In this legend, the Mongols are driven off by a vicious storm in which Raijin is in the clouds throwing lightning and arrows at the invaders.

やはり神風と同一視している記述がありました。ところがこれの出典は:

Joly, Henri L. (1908). Legend in Japanese Art: A Description of Historical Episodes, Legendary Characters, Folk-lore, Myths, Religious Symbolism, Illustrated in the Arts of Old Japan. John Lane.

となっており、1908年という“Pacific Mythorogy"より遙かに古い本に記述があるらしいことが分かりました。

例によってarchive.orgを調べてみるとこれも収蔵されていました。 これは著作権が切れているせいか、ログイン不要で見られます。

少し長いので関連する部分だけを抜き出してみます。

RAIDEN 雷電, or Kaminari Sama.
The Thunder God, usually depicted as a creature of red colour with the
face of a demon, with two claws on each foot, and carrying on its back a
drum or a wheel of drums.

The thunder animal jumps from tree to tree in storms; it is fond of
eating people’s navels, and the only protection against such contingency
occurring consists in the use of a mosquito net, which the animal cannot
enter, and in the accessory burning of incense, which it abhors.

When the Mongols attempted to invade Japan, they were repelled in
a storm, and legend has it that only three men escaped to tell the story.
Raijin's intervention in favour of Japan is often depicted in this event,
when he is shown in the clouds emitting lightning and speeding arrows at
the invaders.

雷様の関する記述も神風に関する記述もあります。 内容もかなり似ているので、 "Funk & Wagnalls"も"Pacific Mythology"も(直接か間接かはともかく) これを元にしていると考えて良さそうです。

少し不思議なのは、この項目は見出しこそ"RAIDEN"なのですが、 本文は全て"Raijin"になっていて、"Raiden"は使われていないことです。 これだけだと「見出しだけが間違いだったのでは」と考えられそうですが、 添えられている漢字は「雷電」なのでよく分かりません。

終わりに

raidenの歴史は100年以上前までたどれることが分かりました。 1904年と言えば開国して約50年しか経っていません。 この時点で日本に関する(と言っても孔明やインドの神も載っているのですが) 700ページ以上の本が出ていることが驚きです。

そしてこの情報がおそらく後続の本に引き継がれてWikipediaにも載り、 AD&Dを経由してNetHackにも謎の痕跡を残していることに感慨を覚えました。

余談

この"Legend in Japanese art"、著作権が切れているので翻訳も問題ないと思うのですが、 どこかで出してないものでしょうか…。
